Knowledge Organisers

What is a Knowledge Organiser?

A Knowledge Organiser is a summary document containing key facts, vocabulary and essential core knowledge that students need to have on a subject, topic or theme. It is the minimum knowledge students need to know.

You can find links to our subject Knowledge Organisers at the end of this page.

Why do we use Knowledge Organisers?

We want to support students to form good study habits, including being able to organise and prioritise their time at home, so they can learn to effectively manage and enhance their knowledge and application skills to become competent lifelong learners.

How can a Knowledge Organiser support our students and parent/carers?

Knowledge Organiser Support

There is no ‘one way’ to study that will work for every student in every subject. As a result, we want to build students’ study ‘toolkit’ so that, over time, they can confidently and routinely choose and use the most effective retrieval strategies, that work best for them, to improve their understanding and retention to make their learning stick. In lessons and through activities in coaching, therefore, students are taught five retrieval strategies to support them to become more confident, independent and resilient learners.

Quizzing and Retrieval
In KS3, students will be set home learning to self-quiz themselves on the knowledge in the knowledge organiser using the five retrieval strategies e.g., ‘Look, Cover, Write, Check, Correct’, Flashcards, Mind Maps, Revision Clocks and Brain Dumps. This will help students to embed the knowledge and support their retrieval of it during in-class assessments and future formal examinations.

You can find our ‘How to Get the Most Out of Your Knowledge Organisers’ guide for the 5 retrieval strategies here
